International networks
- NordMedia Network is a community platform for Nordic media researchers run by Nordicom, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers; I was the co-founder of the platform and am now working as the editor-in-chief and responsible editor.
- NordMedia is the biennial conference for media and communication researchers in the Nordic countries that I’m co-organizing at Nordicom, arranged by the Nordic national media research associations; I’m also in charge of the NordMedia pre-conference for Nordic doctoral students.
- UNESCO Media and Information Literacy & Intercultural Dialogue University Network (MILID University Network) is a global academic network to support the research and higher education advancing media and information literacy; my university is the only Nordic member and I was the co-lead of the network in 2019–2022. I’m also a member in the North American and European regional chapter of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance (former GAPMIL).
- European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) is a yearly communication, media and journalism research conference where I’m chairing the TWG Media Literacies and Communication Competencies (MLCC) that I co-founded together with Charmaine Voigt, Gloria Gómez Diago and Inge Beekmans. Previously, I was engaged as the vice-chair of the ECREA section Journalism and Communication Education (JCE) and the YECREA representative of Finland.
- The Nordic Committee for Journalism Education (Nordiska samarbetskommittén för journalistutbildning) is a network for Nordic journalism educators. The network issues Nordplus mobility grants, coordinates and initiates collaboration between Nordic journalism schools and arranges the biennial NordJour journalism educators’ conference. I have been a member since 2013 and the chair in 2019–2022.
- The World Journalism Education Council (WJEC) is a global network for journalism schools; I’m representing the Nordic journalism education institutions.
National networks
- The Academic Forum of MIL Research (Akademiskt forum för MIK-forskning) is a national network for Swedish researchers interested in the study of media and information literacy, run by Nordicom in collaboration with the Swedish Agency for the Media (Mediemyndigheten, former Swedish Media Council, Statens medieråd). I founded the forum in 2020 and represent researchers in the national multistakeholder network MIL Sweden (Nätverket MIK Sverige) coordinated by the Swedish Agency for the Media. In 2024, the Academic Forum of MIL Research became a national chapter of the UNESCO MIL Alliance.
- Finnish Critics’ Association (SARV) (Suomen arvostelijain liitto – Finlands kritikerförbund) is the professional union for art critics in Finland that I share a long history with. I have been active in the fine arts critics’ section, and a member of the editorial board of the magazine Kritiikin Uutiset – Kritikernytt. Today, I am part of the Arvostelijapankki portal and occasionally write essays for Kritiikin Uutiset – Kritikernytt.
- The Finnish Association of Non-Fiction Writers (Suomen tietokirjailijat – Finlands facklitterära författare) is an association for professional writers of non-fiction and textbooks in Finland. I’m a member since 2015.
- The Swedish Association of Educational Writers (Läromedelsförfattarna) is an association for authors of educational books and materials in Sweden. I’m a member since 2023.
- Finnish Society of Media Education (Mediakasvatusseura – Sällskapet för mediefostran) is an association for practitioners and researchers of media literacy in Finland.
- Sweden-Finnish Research Network (Ruotsinsuomalainen tutkimusverkosto – Sverigefinskt forskningsnätverk) is a network for researchers and everyone interested in research-based evidence on the national minority of Sweden-Finns, co-founded with Leena Huss in 2022, and run by the Association of Sweden-Finnish Research that I co-founded with Leena Huss and Iines Turunen in 2024. The network runs Forskning & den nationella minoriteter sverigefinnar, a portal dedicated to research that deals with the national minority of Sweden-Finnish and Finnish language in Sweden. The portal includes an online gallery of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral theses with relevance for the national minority of Sweden-Finns, written at Swedish and Finnish academic institutions, as well as interviews with thesis writers.
